Film Story
This 20-minute film follows Tom Ostapchuk on his solo, self-supported journey to kayak the entire 300 km-long Grand River in southern Ontario. Fighting for his dreams and searching for his place in the world, he finds the courage and determination to push beyond his limits.
The eight-day expedition tests his determination and stamina as he faces powerful rapids, long days paddling, and isolation with his thoughts. Along the way he meets passionate paddlers who share their words and wisdom to guide his journey.
As Tom rediscovers his place in these lands, he reminds us about the importance of celebrating the natural wonders that exist in our own backyard.

How the film came to be
After Tom moved back to his home province of Ontario from a few years living in British Columbia, he longed for the multi-day adventures that are commonplace in the west coast mountains. Determined to continue having big adventures, Tom looked to the Grand River as an unexplored opportunity. Tom has been looking for opportunities to make a film after completing the Adventure Filmmakers Workshop at the Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival in 2019.
Indigenous content
The film features an interview with a resident of the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve, conducted at Chiefswood Park. Written permission was given by both the interviewee and the Six Nations Tourism Development Corporation to use the content presented in the film in creative context of the broader story.
