CASE STUDY:

UBCO

The Challenge

The UBCO Nursing Program sought to address a critical need in healthcare education: demonstrating the real impact that nurse–patient interactions can have on overall care. While nursing is widely recognized as a vital profession, students and the broader community often underestimate how profoundly both positive and negative interactions shape patient experiences and outcomes. The program needed a way to both educate and inspire, showcasing the importance of communication, empathy, and professionalism in nursing practice.

The Solution

The result was a series of four videos designed to illustrate the tangible effects of nurse–patient interactions. Two videos highlighted positive experiences, showing how supportive communication, empathy, and attentiveness build trust and contribute to better patient outcomes. In contrast, two videos demonstrated negative interactions, underscoring how dismissive or ineffective communication can create lasting harm and erode trust in the healthcare system.

Each video, ranging from 4:50 to 6:15 minutes in length, was carefully scripted and filmed to balance authenticity with educational impact. Together, the series provides a powerful teaching tool for nursing students and an accessible way to spark reflection and dialogue about professional standards in nursing care.
